Morro Bay Program Law Enforcement Exploring, “the
Explorers’, is
a career oriented program for young people that offers an opportunity
to explore a career in law enforcement by working with local law enforcement agencies.
Although this is not a Neighborhood Watch program, we include it here
because its work so effectively supports the achievement of our goals.
The training these young people receive provides them with skills
and knowledge that allow them to make significant contributions to
community crime prevention and safety.

The program is generally available to all youth ages 14 through 21.
Our Explorer Post meets once a week or twice a month. These meetings
are for training and educating. This is the “true meat” of the law
enforcement education. In these meetings Explorers are taught things
like:
-
How to properly use police radios
-
Officer safety tactics
-
Vehicle stops
-
Subject contacts
-
How to deal with domestic conflict
-
Some activities our post is involved
in include:* Patrol “ride-alongs”
-
Public services such as directing
traffic at the Harbor Festival, loading supplies for Katrina victims
-
Explorer
competitions
-
Special Olympics
-
Caroling Cops
The Explorers offer maturing youth an opportunity to
learn leadership skills, and to compete as a team in State and National
conferences. At these conferences, members are tested in front of
judges on basic skills such as traffic stops, building searches, arrests,
etc. Results are graded against fellow explorers from all over the
country. In 2007, Morro Bay’s Explorers group
took 1st in a National Competition. For further information: Learning
